Nature has a funny way of letting you know when you’ve pressed your luck just a little too much.
One Scottish woman who was visiting Romania found that out the hard way. Her and her friend were driving through the Carpathian mountains when they came across a mother bear with her cubs on the road. In not-so-intelligent fashion, they stopped the car to get a better look at the family.
The real mistake they made was rolling down the windows to take pictures with the bears. As the story goes, the mother bruin stood up and rested its paws on the windowsill. It apparently stayed there long enough for one of the women to snap a picture with it.
Miraculously, they made it through that part of the encounter without any mishaps. But then Moria Gallacher, the other woman in the car, decided that she also wanted to try and snap a photo with the big bear, as she described as she laid on a gurney (we’ll just call it foreshadowing instead of a spoiler):
“What had happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side and no problem. It let us take a picture and it went away. But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back and it was at my side.”
As Moria posed for a picture, the bruin brutally attacked her through the car window. As the bear bit and scratched the woman, there was not much she could do to play defense. Luckily, she was wearing multiple layers since the weather was colder up in the mountains. Gallacher credits not losing her arm, or at the very least her injuries not being worse, to the thick, padded jacket she was sporting that day.
Following the attack, Moria Gallacher was rushed to a nearby hospital in an ambulance. It was there where she was treated for wounds to her arm and hands, and she’s now expected to make a full recovery. And through it all, she had a great attitude for someone who had just been attacked by an apex predator.
She ironically said this as she was pushed into the hospital on a stretcher:
“I’m not going to be on STV News.”
Narrator voice: “She was going to be on STV News.”
