Koe Wetzel Gets Back To His Texas Rock Roots With New “9 Lives (Black Cat)”

Put on your stompin’ boots for this one because Koe Wetzel is bringing that country rock BACK.

The East Texas superstar released another single that should be set to appear on KW6 (announcement of that still pending). Wetzel teased the song for weeks leading up to its release, gaining quite the hype around the track, and it does not disappoint.

“9 Lives (Black Cat)” is a quintessential Koe Wetzel song, a return to that gritty Texas rock sound he broke out with. The lyrics depict the rockstar pushing the limits because he feels like he is living like a cat, having nine lives to go through.

“I always like hitting the listener right in the nose. ‘9 Lives’ is a straight-up rock song, man. I’m influenced by so many genres of music, but with this record, I found myself going back to the Texas country and classic rock that I grew up listening to.”

Never afraid to push the limits, the song opens up with Koe throwing down in a pool hall in Houston, embracing his untouchable nine lives mantra:

“I’ve got a nine lives state of mind
Betting it all with a roll of the dice
People seem to lose their luck when I come around

I’ve got a 12 pack two dime bags
Flatlined twice just to come right back
God blessed me
The first eight didn’t count
Keep on trying our best to put the black cat down”

Written by Wetzel alongside producer Gabe Simon and Amy Allen, Wetzel noted earlier in a studio teaser clip that he wanted to get back to an edgier sound, and he does just that. After one listen you’re ready to stomp your boots and get a little rowdy after a beer or… ten.

“I will say, from what we have worked together on, I want to get a little more edgier. Let’s get crazy with it. I feel like we have enough slower songs than what people are used to from me, so let’s get back to what they know. Which is that rocky, nasty sh*t.”

This song is one that you’ll want to turn all the way up.

We will see if Koe Wetzel follows suit with his past trends with two single releases and then an album announcement. If that is the case, we should get a KW6 announcement really soon.

I’m also fully convinced that Koe is the only person who can use a cat as a prop, and it is somehow deemed a thirst trap. Next thing you know, people will be using cats to pick up girls instead of dogs…
